Spring has arrived in Colorado! With sunshine and a blue sky above all the blooms, it’s always a long-awaited sweet time of year. As we’re cleaning up houses and yards, it’s also a great time to do a little health refresh for our bodies! So many people truly overdo it when trying to focus on healthy habits. Small, consistent actions can have a significant impact on your health! Here are a few of our favorites that have big results for your health over time…
Hydrate.
Commit to drinking enough water every day. To find the proper calculation, divide your body weight by two, which equals the ounces of water you need daily. The easiest way to jumpstart your day is to drink 16 oz. of water right when you wake up. There are numerous health benefits to starting your day this way. Add a pinch of salt & a squeeze of lemon for bonus boosters- the salt & citrus increase hydration! They replenish the electrolytes your body lacks after sleep and increase water absorption into your tissues throughout the day.
Move.
Our bodies need movement to stay healthy. Exercise has so many forms these days; there is something for everyone. Often, it gets overly overcomplicated. Two important types of exercise are cardiovascular training and strength building. People will gravitate towards the one that feels the most comfortable or easiest. If you love walking or running, consider adding a strength training routine or pilates. If you love yoga, pilates, or lifting weights, add cardio like walking or jogging a few days a week. Balancing cardiovascular training and strength building is key to injury prevention. Most importantly, choose an exercise you enjoy so you will stick to your plan, and actually do it!
Eat Fresh.
Increasing your intake of fresh foods can significantly impact your overall health. For a snack, choose an apple, carrots, or cucumber instead of crackers or a granola bar. Blend a few cups of spinach or kale and add it to your pasta sauce at the end of cooking—you won’t even taste it! Or try the ultimate fresh foods booster: a smoothie.
Purple Berry Smoothie: To a blender add: 2 cups spinach + 1/2 banana + 1/2 cup frozen mixed berries + 1/3 avocado + 1 cup water or your favorite milk— blend until smooth.
Peach Mango Green Smoothie: 2 cups mixed greens + 2/3 frozen banana + 1/4 avocado + 1/2 cup peaches + 1/3 cup Mango + 1 cup water or your favorite milk— blend until smooth.
