What is TMJ?
Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJD) is an increasing issue for the general population. It may include pain, clicking, restriction and locking of the jaw joint. Often accompanied by headaches, teeth grinding, and clenching of the jaw. It can be an incredibly painful and debilitating condition if left untreated.
For many people, there is a large musculoskeletal component contributing to their jaw dysfunction. Dr. Haley has been treating jaw pain since her time in chiropractic school. With the uptick in TMJ complaints in the past few years, we decided to formalize her successful TMJ treatment protocol and offer it to help more people. All treatments are customized to each patient, but the overall program leans to a more specific treatment schedule than other therapies in our offices.
With many many referrals from dental offices, we have had great success helping people get out of pain and improve the function of their jaw. Patients have successfully avoided botox and surgeries with our help!
What Can I expect with TMJ Treatment?
Treatment targets the muscles of the jaw with a combination of therapies including trigger point release, dry needling, friction massage and lymphatic drainage techniques. (Rarely does the jaw require a chiropractic manipulation.) After the initial assessment, treatment sessions are usually scheduled for 10-15 minutes to maximize efficiency. Frequency of treatment is very important in the initial phase of the program, so patients can expect a few weeks of 2x per week appointments. As patients enter phase two of the program, time between treatments will continue to increase.
Home care is an essential part of the TMJ treatment program. Patients are given specific recommendations, nothing takes too long (5-10 minutes per day), but it’s VERY important that they are completed as instructed. Recovery time after treatment is minimal, so it’s easy to weave into your schedule. Combination therapies may be recommended if necessary, as well as treatment to other body areas if they are contributing to dysfunction (most often the neck and shoulders).
