What is dry needling?
Dry needle therapy is a form of tissue work that helps the body balance muscle tension, connective tissue dysfunction and myofascial trigger points.
Dry needling is performed using a very small gauge needle, 1/10th of the size of needles used to draw blood. The needle is inserted into specific dysfunctional areas within muscle tissue called trigger points. The technique creates immediate physiologic change within the tissue by decreasing local and referred pain, promoting blood flow, increasing neurotransmitter communication, increasing range of motion, and improving muscle activation patterns.
Dry needle therapy is a very safe technique with it’s biggest side effects being temporary muscle soreness and minor bruising.

What can I expect with dry needling?
A calming and nurturing environment in our office helps people feel at ease and comfortable during their treatments. We aim to promote healing and recovery in every way we can. We also like to keep things casual- so let us know if you have a music request or anything else to make your visit more comfortable!
After clinical evaluation, patients can expect a 20-30 minute treatment session per area. Comfort level during treatment is variable- minimal discomfort from the needle stick itself, to dull achy pain and muscle twitches. Most patients describe the sensations as “weird” but tolerable and have no trouble getting through treatment. Most activities are perfectly safe after treatment, some restrictions may be advised for a day or two for very intense forms of exercise. Each patient is given recovery instructions based on their individual case, lifestyle, and their body’s response to treatment. Home care after dry needling is minor, usually only including heat therapy and increased water consumption.
Patients at our office see pain decrease quickly and functional ability improve- our focus is on results! We work with your body to reduce pain and optimize function quickly with specific, personalized care plans. Including individualized stretches and exercises to support treatment helps prevent the problem from recurring.
